Feasibility Study for modern wholesale fruit market (Mandi) in the capital city of an Indian state with the State Agriculture Marketing Board (AMB) as the client

Project Brief

The AMB had envisaged development of Modern Wholesale Fruit Market with commercial real estate development at a specified location. A feasibility study for setting up the mandi was to be carried out.

Team’s Scope of Work:

  1. Assessment of the existing throughputs at nearby mandis and projecting the fruit throughput for a 15-year horizon
  2. Overall location assessment in terms of approach roads, traffic movement, area requirement over the next 15-year period etc.
  3. Assessment of demand for various types of services, like, warehousing, sorting and grading, light processing etc.
  4. Analysis of demand for any other service associated with whole sale marketing of fruits with significant revenue generation potential for the future

Outcome:

Based on the comprehensive study, our recommendation to the client with respect to setting up the new mandi on the earmarked land parcel was in the negative. AMB is contemplating alternate uses of that land parcel.

Preparation of vision document for animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries for one state government in India

Project Brief

This state was one of the pioneers in developing the animal husbandry, poultry and dairy sectors in the country post-independence but had slipped to the fifth place (in terms of sizes of these sectors) due to inefficiencies in operations and inability to embrace various technological advancements. The state government realized how crucial the contribution of these sectors was for the economy and employment creation. It in turn, took our team’s services for preparing a vision document detailing a concrete roadmap for reviving these sectors.

Team’s Scope of Work:

  1. A comprehensive as-is analysis of these sectors in terms of current infrastructure, supply chain etc.
  2. Identify gaps in the current practices w.r.t. international and national benchmarks and suggesting interventions at each level (through in-depth field investigations and interactions with stakeholders)
  3. Provide detailed information on various regulatory issues like business license/permit, clearances, and other statutory requirements
  4. Development of solution design for each of the priority issues accompanied with measurable monitoring and evaluation indicators

Outcome:

Our analysis was used to develop a Vision for the sector along with time bound action plans.

Promoting sustainability initiatives in spices linked to market-driven cultivation by a government agency

Project Brief

It was observed that certain traditional areas under chilli cultivation were not being able to produce export quality chilli due to years of incessant pesticide use. Therefore, it was decided to cultivate chilli in non-traditional areas by adopting good agricultural practices and integrated crop management. We were appointed as advisor and facilitator in this process.

 

Team’s Scope of Work:

  1. Area identification and signing agreements with selected progressive farmers for cultivation of desired variety of chilli
  2. Maintain a pass book for all farmers containing details of each of the registered farmers – name, address, land area belonging to him under chilli cultivation, chilli seed varietal break up, experience in chilli farming, if any, details of pesticides being used, cultivation practices being followed by the farmer, other crops being grown by the farmer etc. Also, generate a unique farmer code for traceability purpose.
  3. Make arrangement for distribution of seeds for nursery raising and direct sowing
  4. Train farmers in use of recommended chilli cultivation practices

Outcome:

The experiment/pilot was successfully carried out in one state of India

 

Assessment and feasibility study for taking over of existing non-operational food processing infrastructure by a state government enterprise

Project Brief

One state government enterprise in India was contemplating taking over of a non-operational but state-of-the-art multi-crop pulping line. Our team was appointed to conduct a detailed feasibility to assess the takeover prospect.

 

Team’s Scope of Work:

  1. A comprehensive study of the existing status of the available fruits and vegetables in the catchment area of the plant along with interaction with stakeholders for determining the availability of crops for plants operations of more than 200 days.
  2. Interaction with potential processors for undertaking the said facility on lease/rental mechanism on a model which will enable the state government realize its investment in a given time period.

Outcome:

The feasibility report was submitted satisfactorily and the recommendations therein are being considered by the state government enterprise.
