Global Home Textile Trade: A Broad-Based Import Rebound, With Japan the Exception
Key global import markets tracked through June 2026 posted synchronized gains for the first time this year. US imports rose 13% year-on-year, the EU gained 10%, and the UK increased 9%, while Japan (May 2026 data) was the sole market in decline, down 8%. Against this broadening import recovery, India’s home textile export performance continues to move in the opposite direction across most categories, extending a decline that has persisted through the first half of the year.
The Import-Side Picture
US home textile imports reached US$1,198 million in June 2026, up 13% year-on-year, though still down 10% on a YTD basis. The EU rose to US$982 million, up 10% YoY but down just 0.1% YTD, while the UK climbed to US$289 million, up 9% YoY and 5% YTD, its strongest position among key markets. Japan’s imports stood at US$237 million in May 2026, down 8% YoY and 3% YTD. On the consumption side, US home furnishing store sales stood at US$5.3 billion in July 2026, down 3% year-on-year, while online furniture and home furnishings sales rose 4% in Q2 2026 to US$4.2 billion.
India’s Export Picture: One Growth Category Amid a Deepening Slide
India’s home textile exports totalled US$3.23 billion for January–June 2026, down 8% YTD against the same period in 2025. The 3% CAGR recorded between 2019 and 2025 continues to describe a structurally flat trade base, with the 2021 peak of US$8.0 billion still the high-water mark. Category-wise performance through June 2026:
- Carpets & Floor Coverings: US$160 Mn, down 7% YoY, 6% YTD
- Bed Linen: US$123 Mn, down 12% YoY, 12% YTD
- Kitchen & Table Linen: US$129 Mn, down 0.5% YoY, 8% YTD
- Furnishings: US$48 Mn, up 17% YoY, down 2% YTD
- Mattress Support & Other Mattresses: US$37 Mn, up 5% YoY, down 10% YTD
- Terry Towel: US$19 Mn, down 14% YoY, 14% YTD
- Blankets: US$17 Mn, down 2% YoY, down 20% YTD — the sharpest YTD decline across all categories
- Curtains: US$17 Mn, up 42% YoY, 36% YTD — the sole category with consistent growth
- Quilts & Comforters: US$9 Mn, up 15% YoY, up 3% YTD
Supplier positioning within the US market continued to shift. China’s share of US home textile imports fell to 36% in 2025 from 43% in 2024, a seven-percentage-point decline, while India advanced to 27% from 24%, and Pakistan rose to 11% from 9%. In the EU, China’s share edged up to 38% from 37%, while India held steady at 10%.
At the company level, FY26 margin trends were mixed against FY25. Welspun Living’s OPM fell from 12% to 8%, Indo Count Industries declined from 13% to 10%, and Himatsingka fell from 18% to 14%. Trident held steady at 13%. The initial Q1 FY27 print showed a partial rebound, with Welspun and Trident’s OPM improving to 11% and 17% respectively.
